The backpacks are an important part of people’s everyday life. A proof for this is the fact that even since the beginning of the civilisation people have been carrying things on their backs. Back in time, they carried them on their bare backs, without having any object or bag to hold them. However, as time passed by people began making simple bags with shoulder straps, used for carrying heavy objects. In fact, these bags consisted of a frame with attached shoulder straps. The frame was used for tying gear, barrels, boxes etc., which were then used for carrying different things.
The initial design of the backpack remained – a frame with shoulder straps attached to it, but it was modified and many new things were added to it, such as hip belt, a strap that wraps around the waist etc. Throughout the years, the frame was changed quite a lot, from wooden to metal to external aluminium frame and finally to the frame that is used today.
As the design was changed and improved from day to day, backpacks for different purposes emerged. If you think a bit about the types of backpacks, you will see that there are backpacks for almost every purpose, i.e. backpacks for hiking, sports backpacks, school backpacks, ice-fishing backpacks, avalanche-airbag backpacks, camera backpacks, professional backpacks etc. They are all similar, the only difference that can be found is only the size. Some of them are designed with wheels on the bottom and an extending handle, so to reduce the strain on the user.
When it comes to the name, the word backpack was coined in the US in the 1910s. And the terms that were used before were moneybag and packsack. Other words that are used for the backpack are bookbag, knapsack, packsack, pack, or bergen. As for the word rucksack, it is of a German origin, mainly used in the UK – rack in German means “the back†and sack is “bagâ€.
Besides being worn for the purpose of carrying things, the backpacks are also worn as fashion accessories. These types of backpacks are specially designed for women and they are not larger than the typical purse. No matter of the type, the backpack is being used widely on a daily basis and we believe that the iBackPack will be far more used than all of them.
